Choosing a Master’s in Management Instead of a Traditional MBA
As a first-generation immigrant from Mexico and a mid-career professional, my profile differed from traditional MBA candidates. I already had a strong foundation in consulting and wanted to transition from technology delivery into strategy. Traditional MBA programs felt excessive—not just in time but in cost, often exceeding $200K. Given my experience, I saw HES as a pragmatic, financially responsible option that provided the education I needed without unnecessary debt.
One of the most valuable aspects of my HES experience was its relevance to my consulting engagements. I could select courses relevant to my work and directly apply what I learned, tailoring my studies to my evolving career needs. The flexibility of the program allowed me to pursue my degree without stepping away from my professional growth.

Applying What I Learned at Harvard Extension School to My Career
HES had an immediate impact on my career. I customized my coursework to fill knowledge gaps and apply new skills in real time. The flexibility allowed me to study while managing an intense workload, which a full-time program couldn’t accommodate. Beyond the academics, Professor Remo’s Public Speaking and Professor Doddy’s Business Writing courses transformed my confidence, helping me articulate ideas effectively and engage in high-stakes conversations.
HES also helped me refine my communication skills. Through courses like Business Writing and Public Speaking, I gained structured frameworks that improved how I engage in professional conversations. Earning the Business Communications graduate certificate was particularly meaningful, giving me the confidence to articulate ideas and establish credibility in a competitive field.
Another unexpected benefit was the extensive and diverse HES alumni network. Many of my classmates have become lifelong friends and professional connections, broadening my perspective and opening doors I hadn’t considered.
HES also inspired me beyond my immediate career. Studying Strategic Management and Nonprofit Management led me to launch my own consulting firm, advising first-generation minority and women entrepreneurs. That experience played a crucial role in securing my current role, where I now focus on public sector and nonprofit clients.
The Long-Term Impact of Harvard Extension School
Today, I am a Strategy and Operations Principal at Slalom, responsible for building a Strategy & Operations practice within technology consulting—the exact role I envisioned before enrolling. My HES experience was truly transformative, both professionally and personally. It strengthened my expertise, expanded my opportunities, and connected me with a global network of accomplished professionals.
And on a personal level, this achievement carries deep significance. Becoming the first person in my family to earn a master’s degree is a source of pride, not just for me but for my entire family. It represents the culmination of years of hard work and resilience, proving that opportunities can be created regardless of where you start.
