The Database Management Microcertificate covers the fundamentals of designing, developing, and managing modern database systems, including relational and NoSQL databases.
Skills & Outcomes
After earning this microcertifiate, you’ll understand:
- The underlying principles of database design, normalization, indexing, data modeling, and query optimization.
- The basics of SQL, including creating, querying, and modifying databases, and writing complex queries.
- How to connect SQL with other programming languages like Python and Java.
- NoSQL databases and their benefits and limitations, and learn how to design, develop, and deploy a NoSQL database.

Starting and Completing a Microcertificate
To begin your microcertificate, you simply register for your first course for the microcertificate — no application required. Learn how to register.
To earn your microcertificate:
- Complete the two courses for graduate credit.
- Earn at least a B grade in each course.
- Complete the courses within two years.
Starting in the 2026-27 academic year, microcertificates must be completed within 2 years. We will accept one course from academic year 2025-26, however at least one class must be completed in Fall 2026 or later to qualify for this policy change.
