When applying to a degree program, you must arrange to have an evaluation performed on certain academic credentials earned from institutions located outside the United States.

  • Before starting coursework toward a degree at Harvard Extension School, arrange to have your international transcript(s) evaluated by International Education Evaluations (IEE). If you wait to do this until you begin the degree program application process, your admission may be delayed or otherwise jeopardized by the results of an evaluation.
    • In most cases, you’ll need to provide an English translation of your transcript to the evaluation company. Refer to their website for details.
  • We accept only official transcripts (i.e., transcripts that are issued directly from the school to our office) and evaluations based on official transcripts (i.e., transcripts that are issued directly from the school to the company).
  • The evaluation company makes initial eligibility recommendations but the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions makes final eligibility determinations.

All application materials, including these evaluations, submitted to Harvard Extension School become the property of Harvard Extension School. Due to mandated record-keeping and archival policies, they cannot be returned under any circumstances.

Undergraduate Applicants

If you’ve earned undergraduate credit from a college or university outside the United States and want to transfer those credits, an evaluation of the transcript must be performed. Contact the school(s) and request two official transcripts: one to be sent directly to IEE and one to be sent directly to the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions.

You’ll need a Course Report from IEE, which charges a fee for this service. Instruct them to send the report electronically to the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions at Admissions@Extension.Harvard.edu or via postal service to the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. You may incur an additional fee for sending evaluations via post.

Contact the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions (OPA&A) after you receive your copy of the report from IEE to request a review of it by OPA&A.

Undergraduate Degree Qualification

The Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions recognizes that university education differs from country to country. Ordinarily, only four-year bachelor’s degrees are considered acceptable for eligibility to our graduate program. However, all degrees, including those that required fewer than four years of study, are individually reviewed by predegree and admissions advisors, and final eligibility determinations are made on a case-by-case basis.

To facilitate our assessment of your formal post-secondary education, we must review each degree you have earned. Request official transcripts for your bachelor’s degree and any additional credential(s) to be sent directly to the Office of Predegree Advising & Admissions. Another official copy of your transcripts must be sent directly to the evaluation company for any school(s) located outside the US.

Premedical Program Applicants

If you’ve earned an undergraduate degree outside the United States, it must be evaluated by either the Center for Educational Documentation (CED) or International Education Evaluations (IEE) to confirm that your degree is equivalent to a four-year US bachelor’s degree awarded by a college or university that was regionally accredited during the time of your attendance and graduation.

Contact the school and request two official transcripts: one to be sent directly to the evaluation company and one to be sent directly to the Premedical Program Office.

Students must contact the evaluation company and request a general evaluation from the CED or Document Report from IEE. Both companies charge a fee for this service. Instruct the company to send your evaluation electronically to the Premedical Program at hcp@Extension.Harvard.edu or via postal service to the Premedical Program, 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA 02138. You may incur an additional fee for sending evaluations via post.
