Why did you choose Harvard Extension School?
I had already obtained an MBA years prior, and as I progressed in my career, strategy came to play a larger role in my current industry. I wanted to dive into management deeper, especially now that I manage a team. I looked into programs that specialize in Strategic Management, and I came across Harvard Extension School.
After reading the courses in the program, it felt like a match! Because only five courses are required, I appreciated that the certificate was a smaller commitment than a full degree such as an MBA, but enough to fulfill the needs of obtaining critical knowledge.
How has your Extension experience helped you throughout your career journey? How do you expect it to impact your next steps?
I really enjoyed every instructor I had in all five classes for the Strategic Management certificate. Each of them brought valuable insights, perspectives and challenged us academically. Aside from these great professors, I appreciated networking with all of my classmates.
Most of us were juggling work, school and busy personal lives. It was great and motivating to be surrounded by and learning with like-minded people.
Now, I am a Senior Engineer at Cummins, supporting vehicles in the electric vehicle market. I have been in this role throughout my duration at Harvard Extension School and am looking to use my certificate to carry me into my next role at work.
Overall, my certificate has helped me grow as an individual and improved my leadership skills at work.
What advice do you have for future HES students?
Go for it! Not only are the instructors amazing, but the course content is exceptional. I wish I could do it all over again. It was certainly a challenge to make the work-life-school balance work, but it was more than worth it. Also, make sure check to see if your current employer would sponsor your courses. My employer did, and it made a world of difference.
