Following the announcement earlier this fall that Hunt Lambert would retire from his role as Dean of the Division of Continuing Education (DCE) at the end of this calendar year, I write today to share information about the search for his successor.

The dean of the DCE oversees a powerful global education platform and the primary outreach arm for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), serving more than 30,000 part-time learners across the globe each year. With a deep commitment to academic excellence and expanding opportunities for learning and educational innovation, the dean of DCE leads the division in its mission to extend Harvard to part-time and summer learners with the academic ability, curiosity, and drive to succeed in rigorous courses and programs. Today, we launch the search for the next incumbent of this important FAS leadership position.

I will lead this work with the support and guidance of a search advisory committee. I am enormously grateful to Gary King, Albert J. Weatherhead III University Professor; Leslie Kirwan, Dean of Administration and Finance for the FAS ; Bharat Anand, Vice Provost for Advances in Learning; Alison Simmons, Samuel H. Wolcott Professor of Philosophy; Joe Blitzstein, Professor of the Practice of Statistics; and Anne Margulies, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, who have agreed to serve as my partners in this effort. The national search will also be supported by Ruth Shoemaker Wood of Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.

Learning from the views of FAS faculty and the DCE community will be an important part of this search process. If you have advice you wish to share with me on the opportunities and challenges ahead for DCE, or on the essential qualities, experiences, and vision the new leader will need to be successful, I encourage you to send your thoughts in confidence by email to DCEdeansearch@fas.harvard.edu.

Please join me in again thanking Hunt for his outstanding service as dean of DCE. His boundless energy and passion for students at every stage of learning has made Harvard stronger and better. Henry Leitner, Associate Dean and Chief Innovation Officer at DCE, has agreed to serve as interim dean starting in January 2020.

Sincerely,

Claudine Gay
