Institute for English Language
Study English as a Second Language
The Institute for English Language Programs (IEL) offers noncredit courses to help you achieve the English proficiency necessary to succeed in a variety of jobs and courses of study. IEL’s unique approach challenges you to rethink traditional instruction, allowing you to take responsibility for your learning. Courses emphasize academic English.
About the Courses
IEL’s noncredit courses are available to students at five levels of proficiency, ranging from a beginning level to a high-advanced level. To determine your level of proficiency, you take the Harvard English language placement test before you register. Once you know your test score and level, you can register for a course at your level.
Fall, January, and Spring Courses
English language courses run for 10 weeks in the fall and spring, and four weeks in the January session.
