Introduction to modern Mandarin pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and writing in Chinese characters and romanization. Emphasis will be on conversation. Approximately 400 characters and half of the basic grammar will be learned. Pinyin romanization and simplified characters will be used. Not for students who have studied Chinese previously.

A continuation of CHIN E-1. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are emphasized through introduction of additional vocabulary and grammar patterns. Students entering CHIN E-2 should know pinyin romanization and a minimum of 200 characters. Prerequisite: CHIN E-1 or equivalent.

This course is a continuation of CHIN E-2. Additional vocabulary and more complex grammar patterns will be introduced. Emphasis will be on further development of listening and speaking skills while increasing attention to reading and writing. Prerequisite: CHIN E-2 or equivalent.

This course builds on the vocabulary, grammar, and characters learned in CHIN E-1 through E-40 by using Chinese in conversation and exploring a variety of cultural topics, including family life, travel, and festivals. The goal of the course is for students to feel comfortable speaking Chinese in everyday situations, such as job interviewing, communicating by phone, and shopping. Both traditional and simplified characters will be used. Prerequisite: CHIN E-40 or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

This course explores more styles, structures, and patterns in modern Chinese with an emphasis on classical and vernacular idioms to enable students to narrate vividly in paragraph length, read short stories by famous authors, and watch award-winning movies. The textbook covers such topics as education, family life, and business. Prerequisite: CHIN E-60 or equivalent.

CHIN E-80 Advanced Modern Chinese II (22120)

A continuation of CHIN E-70, this course improves students' overall ability in speaking, listening to, reading, and writing Chinese. Special emphasis on newspaper reading and practicing computer skills such as surfing Chinese websites and writing Chinese with computers. Simulation situations such as debates on social issues, cultural comparisons, and business talks will be created for student involvement. Prerequisite: CHIN E-70 or equivalent.
